The long-rumoured annexing of Friday night’s edition of “The One Show” by Chris Evans is happening.

Now, being an internet blogger I’m not going to let anything like full possession of the facts get in the way of my opinion. But it just seems like a slap in the face to Adrian Chiles for his sterling work on the Noughties Nationwide. Doesn’t seem fair to me.
Hopefully it’s by mutual agreement – perhaps Adrian has other commitments that he needs to honour, and he’s been trying to get this sorted for months. I hope so. Because I’m getting a little bit hacked off with celebrities being parachuted in to high-profile postings, displacing professionals who deserve a little better than being shunted aside when the ratings need a boost. Admittedly this is slightly different, what with Chris being a seasoned hand at this sort of thing (and one who has matured into a quietly wonderful radio broadcaster, fulfilling all of the potential he’d seemingly ditched during his off-kilter years).
We’ll have to wait and see. If it’s all by mutual agreement, then I’ve got no right to complain. Not that I have anyway. Being a bloke with a blog. It’s just… all I see is a well-loved broadcaster being marginalised in favour of a more high-profile one. I hope that in a couple of months we won’t be hearing “Adrian has decided to move onto pastures new, and will be leaving us altogether. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours”. Which is what I fear is about to happen.
Good luck, Adrian. And despite my grumpiness about this move (I’m obviously a born-to-be-Radio 4-listener type : resistant to change of any sort), I’d be churlish not to say – Good luck, Chris. Prove me wrong. Use your undoubted experience to make the Friday night edition absolutely superb.
