At a private brunch on May 16th 1929, the 1st Academy Awards ceremony was held. 270 people sat and watched the beginnings of a major motion picture tradition as a mere fifteen awards were handed out in a ceremony which lasted barely a quarter of an hour.
83 annual wingdings later, here we are in 2012 and a friend has challenged me to watch and review every winner of the Best Picture award, from “Wings” right up to “The Artist”. I’ve been pondering this for a while now and – if nothing else – the elegant symmetry of there being a silent picture at either end of the challenge has proven too much to resist. I hereby take up the gauntlet. I’m going for it.
Said friend suggested that I try to review the nominees for Best Picture as well, but in terms of accessibility alone this is proving virtually impossible – I’m unable to source copies of some of the nominees for the first few years so for the time being I’m restricting myself to the winner only. That may change, with a few retrospective round-ups if I manage to track any of the nominees down.
There’s no set timetable to this – I want this to be a challenge that’ll hopefully prove pleasurable, exciting and enjoyable (to me, if not for you) so I’ll do it as and when the enthusiasm strikes. I’ve seen many of these films already but for the purposes of this I’ll rewatch as and when they come up. There’s a raft of films in there that I’ve never even looked at, so there’s a good chance I’m going to fall in love several times over the course of the next 85 films or so. We’ll see.
Wish me luck, dear reader. “Wings” will follow presently, with “Broadway Melody” as soon as I’ve managed to track down a copy. It’s proving elusive at present, but I shall not rest, nor shall my sword sleep in my hand etc…
Here we go. This could be a fun voyage. Fancy sailing along with me?
